Irene Hurford, MD, is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with over 20 years of experience treating psychosis with both medications and psychotherapy. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Toronto, and received her MD from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She was chief resident during her residency at UCLA, and completed a two-year research fellowship in San Diego. Hurford was faculty at the University of Pennsylvania for over ten years, and is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, where she teaches and supervises residents. She was founder and clinical director of the Psychosis Education, Assessment, Care, and Empowerment (PEACE) program at Horizon House, Inc, one of the premier First-Episode Psychosis (FEP) programs in the United States. She was the founder and director of HeadsUp at the University of Pennsylvania, where she led Pennsylvania-wide efforts on FEP services program evaluation, and programmatic training in FEP Coordinated Specialty Care service implementation and delivery. Hurford is the recipient of awards including the NAMI National Exemplary Psychiatrist award. She is the Chair of the Board for Mental Health Partnerships. Hurford is a candidate at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, where she also teaches about psychotherapy for psychosis. She is currently in private practice in the Philadelphia area where she specializes in the treatment of psychosis using a combination of low-dose medication and psychotherapy to reduce or eliminate psychotic symptoms and restore functioning.
