Deborah L. Cabaniss M.D.

Deborah L. Cabaniss, M.D., is Professor Emerita in Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University. She is also a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She is the winner of numerous teaching awards, including the Columbia University Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching, APsA’s Edith Sabshin Award, and the APA’s Irma Bland Award. She is a graduate of Yale University and the Columbia University College of Physicians, and she completed her psychoanalytic training at Columbia. Her book, “Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Clinical Manual,” written with co-authors Sabrina Cherry, Carolyn Douglas, and Anna Schwartz, and now in its 2nd edition, was published by Wiley in January 2011 and is being used by residency training programs across the country and in Canada. It has been translated into Mandarin, Korean, and Farsi – and French is on the horizon. Her second book, “Psychodynamic Formulation,” written with the same group of co-authors as well as Ruth Graver, was published in 2013, and her third book, “Different Patients, Different Therapies,” was published by Norton in 2019. She lives and practices in New York City.
