About

David M. Carreon, MD, is a psychiatrist and cofounder of Acacia Clinics in Silicon Valley working to transform mental health care. He studied and served at Stanford, where he earned his MD, completed a psychiatry residency, and worked as a professor. He is a leading clinician in the treatment of major depressive disorder, achieving success in some of the most challenging cases using an approach that combines the latest technologies and the oldest truths.

He led Acacia as it grew into the largest navigated brain treatment center in the world. He participated in the development of the SAINT-TMS treatment for treatment-resistant depression, the first FDA-cleared treatment for mental illness that is based on an individual patient's own brain. He deployed HOPE-TMS at Acacia, a 1-week brain stimulation approach that creates custom targets for a variety of mental health challenges. He recently contributed to the discovery of a PTSD circuit and was the first to successfully use the circuit in treatment of a patient.

He continues to work on discovering breakthrough treatments for brain disorders and on ways to get them to patients. He is the author of The Opposite of Depression: What My Work with Suicidal Patients Has Taught Me about Life, Hope, and How to Flourish. He loves teaching; going on dates with his wife, Abigail; and excessively long brunch conversations.
