It is interesting to see the speculation that a cultural shift towards what could be a more individualistic society is increasing the severity and prevalence of mental illnesses. The "individual search for happiness" shows that more social pressures are being placed on the individual citizen, and maybe the stress of individuality and accountability being placed on the individual does cause a higher rate of mental diseases. It is certainly apparent among Western societies that we are typically more stressed because of our views of the self, and who is responsible for our happiness.
