Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I've been loosely diagnosed as having ADD. I'm 31 years old and as I look back I had trouble focusing and not 'getting' things as easily as normal kids do. I'm still having a bit of that issue now that I'm older.
I didn't have a safety net at home and I was ridiculed at school. Everyone (including myself) just thought I was too lazy to think. I think that resulted in bouts of anxiety, depression and low self esteem
My question is, how do I help myself without resorting to medication or expensive therapy?
