Good point about the money spent on animal protection vs the environment. I don't have exact figures on this but from what a highly placed executive in a national animal protection organization told me, the majority of the the six billion (and probably less now with the recession) goes to groups like the Sierra Club and World Wildlife Fund rather than groups like PETA and the HSUS.

Even if we take meat (and pets) out of the equation, we still spend vastly more on killing animals that saving them. By the way, I am a social scientist - not an animal activist.
