Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

Sometimes I marvel at how much we do, on a daily basis, to make ourselves "just feel better." It's overwhelming to think about how crappy many, if not most, of us feel, as a baseline (thanks American consumer culture). What's going on? We are the richest (material wealth) society on the planet and we claim to feel more connected than ever before (via technology), yet we're all running around trying to fill that hole and feel better. How could a society have so many depressed, anxious, empty, and addicted people? I wonder if life is suppose to be this bad or if "technology" and "progress" has really backfired for us all. Just thinking about it makes me want to shop (or drink)!
