The Brit publisher had it right - perhaps with the addition of murder mystery series and bodice-rippers. Thanks for the name of your books. There are two essays written in the Seventies in Andre Dubus essay collection, Broken Vessels, that talk about his inability to sell a short story collection to his publisher - that was the bellwether. There was also a 3-part series in the New Yorker back in the Eighties talking about the corporatization of publishing and predicting the atrocities to follow.
