I don't see how this follows because you don't take into account national differences.

Eg New Zealand has one of the highest rates of cat ownership in the world. Our cats are allowed to roam outside and the vast majority of people don't want to shoot or maim them if felines take a dump in their front lawn. It is illegal to declaw cats here as it is in most civilised countries. As a nation we love cats.

Now Ireland has one of the highest rates of dog ownership in the world (they still don't declaw their cats of course) and the Irish don't like cats. As a nation they just love doggies.

I'd say you'd get state variations in cat and dog ownership in the U.S.
