I'm a 21 year old with ADD who went all the way through the public school system. I was medicated for a couple years in grade school, but my parents decided they didn't like what it did to my personality even though my grades rose. Post-Ritalin, they took a tack of placing the responsibility for my success on my shoulders; not on my teachers, not on themselves. (See my way-too-long comment below.) It worked out pretty well, and my grades were even better. I'm sorry you had such a negative experience, but I found that the "crowd control" aspect of public education is only as much of a problem as you allow it to be. The teachers (in my experience) aren't asking for miracles, just tact, social awareness, and respect.
