I think hildren want to be like the "cool" parts of society, like the best hunter and most cunning thinker in most of human history... but udging just after the looks, these people are now not the exhausted parents coming home from some boring job but the guy from school who drinks a jug of beer fastest, or the one having that cool motorbike. (Or the heroes of some TV series specifically designed for that purpose.) And being like those doesn't help one much to be an useful member of society.

I agree that more freedom would be much better for children, but I think that they should be much more connected with the "real world" while exploring their environment, like our ancestor's children were. (How to accomplish that is a different question, but without recognizing the problem we won't solve it, either...)
