Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

Weird is an acronym for the samples on which most psychology studies are based - Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democractic. These samples don't extrapolate well into the real world. Scientific America (Google WEIRD and Scientific America) has a good article on this.
Most psychology research is undertaken on 20 year old female psychology University Students - they are considered to be the lab rats of psychology. Many people believe the failure to replicate research in the real world is due to the use of these student lab rats - they are hardly representative of society.
But unfortunately for psychology professors the cost of finding real world samples is prohibitive.
So to summarize it is highly probable that Todd's research if conducted on a sample of 40 year old male office workers would come out with a totally different result.
So its probably best to read the research as if it were science fiction.
