The kids are influenced, more likely than not, by their parents reactions to nature.

Watch how some adults react to nature - it is appalling to watch the ignorance, cruelty, the snide comments, the fear and wimpy behavior when exposed to nature.

I feel lucky to have had parents that respected nature, yet were not afraid of it. They did not allow us to cringe at things that many people find creepy, and the sight of a snake didn't reduce my parent to tears. We weren't allowed to get hysterical at the sight of a spider - indeed, we spent so much time outdoors that we encountered all sort of living creatures and got comfortable with it.

Exposure to nature by mature, caring adults who can exert some leadership in the arena is a good thing for children.
