I am familiar with what you call "journeying" and use a tour through my own home for larger lists. I suppose this is what you mean by loci technique. Nearly all of the research I've encountered over the years at brain conferences and the like suggest that episodic memory is one of the strongest, longest lasting. In that sense, this visual pegging system is a weaker way to do it--but, as you noted, it is so easy to demonstrate and goes a long way towards convincing others that mere repetition is less effective.
