Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I too have realized I am the loquacious student. This week in class two other students made comments that "some students" answer all the questions. I usually only answer when the professor asks for input a second time but I guess etiquette is to pretend you too didn't read the chapter. It felt like I was in 5th grade again and being called a know-it-all for always having the right answer. I enjoy contributing but now feel out of place knowing that regular vocal participants are annoying to everyone and teachers are trying to get them to stop.
