My family hasn't had cable TV for about a decade, and now the kids are 13 (girl) and 16 (boy). The only thing my son asks for every now and then are video games. My daughter doesn't care too much about fashion, and the only thing she makes me buy is the occasional nail polish.
My kids ask me for things so rarely that every time they do, I buy it for them. They're still like any other kids, they watch their shows and movies on the Internet, which thankfully has a lot less advertising than regular TV. The little advertising they get is generally non captive because they can always close the window if they get annoyed.
