I think you're pretty spot on. It's popular because it inherently tells people they're special. Everyone falls into a rare personality type, and that makes them unique. It strokes their ego. It's emotional masturbation.
But, what if I told them that there are no personality types? What if I told them that they are the only one like them, and that makes them even more unique, and therefore even more special? It wouldn't be wrong. Do you think I would convert them back to reality?
