I found some mixed sources on this point so I'm not sure if anything is definite, but whether it be Michelangelo or Ai Wei Wei or any other artist there are plenty of cases where the person who devises the idea is separate from the person who does the work, yet the former more often gets the credit. This is also true in science labs where the principal investigators usually come up with the idea and grad students, post-docs, lab techs, and undergrads do much of the leg work. Ultimately the PI gets most of the credit, some of the leg work folks do not even get authorship.
