Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

JOHN DOE: I think any half-decent christian would work to free the slaves vs. treat them like cattle, separate their families, deny them equivalent shelter/food/respect, rape the women, work them to literal death, whip them and use their christian faith to promise them a better life in heaven while treating them to a living hell.
Also, by my research, chattel slavery -- that which was practiced in the U.S. -- was very different than the indentured servitude that predominated in Africa. Slavery is slavery but there are degrees.
And to assume that slavery would have happened anyway seems to be a way to absolve European slave traders of guilt.
I find your arguments repugnant.
