Not having read the book, it sounds more like Ms. Flora's personal observations than a rigorously researched report. Some of the assertions Dr. DeP highlighted did ring slightly off-key.
Like when there are hurt feelings, and working through them can be harder than with a spouse--I found working through feelings with a spouse to be much murkier. Just yesterday, my friend Alice and I were deciding whether or not to attend a trivia match in the evening. Alice is living with cancer and I have long-term pain issues, so we kind of have a social get-out-of-jail-free card with our larger circle of friends. I texted Alice, "I love that we can be totally honest with each other about our level of inclination to go out." We decided to stay in, but we do go out to dinner once a week as our "depression prevention exercise."
