Perhaps if non-nutritive sweeteners are used to sweeten simple carbohydrates and highly processed foods such as snack foods or bakery goods, then their use could lead to weight gain.
I recall the slogan "There is no such thing as a bad food; there are only bad diets."
Maybe we need to look at the total picture of what is consumed and how much physical activity there is, not just elements thereof.
