Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I was just talking to my girlfriend about this very thing the other day. Every packaged vacation is so forgettable——most trips to D.C. come to mind, where someone in the party has to see every monument and the 2 big Smithsonian museums. It's grueling. I imagine most people's trips to London are similar.
Every vacation with either stationary relaxation (beach house, cabin) or with a purpose and sense of off-the-beaten-path adventure is a great and memorable one.
