Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I searched the web for the opposite of deja vu because over the last 8 months and more over the last three I have seen signs, art, and landscaping I didn't recognize and I believed I should have since I had been in those places before. At first I thought "is that new?" Others said, no it has been here for years. But I had been in these places many times and never noticed. I am 57 and worried about dementia. I do not have epilepsy. I do have ADHD and thought maybe I just never noticed as it wasn't important. The increase frequency in common places and the onset of my age concerns me. I have no health problems and so not know if I should be evaluated or just consider this a phenomena variant of normal and not a signal of cognitive disorders.
