Ellen, Great article! At Badge of Life however we have reversed our original position on voluntary vs. mandatory Mental Health Checks. We have found that Chiefs who have made them mandatory in their departments have discovered it helps breaks the stigma and allows the whole department to benefit from having a private mental health provider ready and waiting beyond the yearly check in because they already have the relationship in place. It turns out many cops begin therapy following the mandatory check-ins. Its all good! Plus, some departments are giving the book , I Love a Cop to every new probationer. Including the family from day one is a game changer. Thanks for the article!
