The song is about a lack of honest communication in courtship, which goes both ways. It's also from an era when it was courtship; one-night stands weren't as frequent then.
The song itself is a duet between two people who have affection for each other, presumably over time. it isn't about feeling threatened.
It's not objectionable -- the objectors are reading a lot into it based on very different norms in their peer groups -- and the lack of communication is still a problem for both men and women.
It's still amusing, because people are still terrible about communicating.
The issues in the song might be worth discussing, but not if everything has to be discussed through a political or ideological filter. A discussion like that doesn't help in the communication that should be personal, not political.
