A closed door can cause all sorts of perception problems, especially in today's work climate, none of them good.

In fact, ten years ago when I was taking a college course and doing my timed test, when all the students had left except for the instructor and I (I was taking all the time given to complete my test), he immediately got up and opened the door to the classroom. He explained that he will not be in a room alone with any student and hoped I would understand why he opened the door. I agreed that it was an excellent policy!

Additionally, a closed door in a small office can raise safety concerns - there might not be a quick way out should things get heated.
