Focusing on self-esteem (and feeling one isn’t enough) will eventually lead to further despair and a shallow, anxious life. This is the norm for our achievement-obsessed culture. Only the “achievement” of self-compassion can bring peace and actual love, can create a meaningful bedrock for the rest and a deeper life. Trying to cobble together a self from “achievements” and then collect admirers/friends impress many but be hollow at the core. This approach also strengthens inequality, elitism, hypocrisy and loneliness.
