This is really where I struggle with meaning. If you look at it in the long-term, the real long-term, where entropy erases everything that we know, its very hard to say that anything is "necessary" in the strictest sense. Nothing being necessary =/= no "needs" to fulfill. So I have to ask, what precisely do you mean by "needs"?
