The opioid epidemic has hit Millennials very hard. In fact, there was a 20% increase in overdose deaths for that age group in 2016. One possible explanation is that many young adults lack coping skills and haven’t developed self-esteem or emotional resilience. This may be largely due to the fact that many young people grow up with two parents working so they don’t get the individual attention necessary to develop these skills. As a result, teens and young adults may feel lonely and turn to other methods to mask their pain. Frequently, they turn to opioids because they have that effect. We should be addressing the hundreds of thousands of people currently suffering from addiction. We must help them by providing effective medical and mental health treatment to address these untreated emotional issues which contributed to their addiction.
