Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

Surely if it's almost like type A but with more anxiety, it would make more sense to call it a sub type of type a- maybe A-2 or something rather than create a whole new category- one would assume once the individual has undergone treatment for management of their anxiety and an understanding of the way it works (similar to CBT maybe) or even been treated for the PTSD or underlying issues, they'd revert to a type A personality.
The issue here isn't that the anxiety has created a new personality- we all struggle to a degree with anxiety, the issue here is the management and or treatment of that- the untreated individual should not be defined by his or her issues but by his or her personality.
Makes me wonder who has their hands in the financial cookie jar over this one.
(Or am I just being cynical...)
