I think this is better advice for online dates. The first date should be kept short for that. If there is more chemistry, then make another meeting.
There are dates where I wish I bowed out early because they actually were that bad. Someone suggested to me I probably should've screened people better before a date to reduce bad dates. It could've saved me some burnout.
