Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I've often wondered why "dating" has to be such a stressful big deal. You don't even know this person, and here you are alone with him/her under a third degree spotlight. Why can't you just go to an event or activity together that you both enjoy, and see if you just have a darned good time together without the third-degree interrogation? Kind of like high school kids do. If I were single, I'd want to know a little more about the person's background before being alone with him. What if he is a serial killer or something? What if he is trying to see if you have any money he could take? What if he has three ex-wives and 12 kids he is paying support for? Asking him those questions would not get you any useful information.
