Having the affair isn't the problem, it is that it was a secret and if found out by "the enemy" could have been used as a threat against him.
It's hard enough to keep secrets when you have nothing to lose, but the loss of his family, career,respect, etc. might have been enough for him to be compromised. Who knows if it would have affected his job or not, but he did the right thing by stepping down.
With so much horror needing our concern, this trial coverage is overdone.
