To some folks, writing about your emotions can give your mind a way to release them, that doesn't involve becoming a social outcast.

Bottling the emotions up or always being That Person that emotes beyond the norm is tedious in any relationship.

So… to some, writing can be a release.

You could write something that's been bothering you down, and then burn it… and that ritual can give your mind a way to process the idea of letting go in a hands-on sort of way. A physical representation of something that's been plaguing you emotionally.

Writing can help tremendously, if done properly and consistently.

It's just one way that some folks find helps them master their emotional ocean inside them. That's all.
