I see the main purpose of an education system is to prepare our young to thrive in the world and in their relationships.
In order to prepare them to thrive I believe we need to teach them hard skills (practical skills for them to create a livelihood and contribute to society) as well as soft skills (social and emotional learning) so they can recognize and manage their emotions, develop empathy for others, and have skills to resolve conflict in a healthy way.
So much of the violence on our planet is a result of us not ever being taught how to deal with strong feelings or how to resolve conflict peacefully. There are lots of people walking around with unresolved anger which results in the headline news we see each day. Wouldn't it be great if every child were explicitly taught healthy ways to work with anger and conflict? what a difference that would make in our world in one or two generations!
