We should always have some kind of civilian monitoring of our defense and security infrastructure. We know they can get carried away.

As for psychiatry and other mental health professionals, the way I see it, some have been helped, and a some have been harmed, by their interactions with mental health professionals. I surely hope that more have been helped. Sometimes the mental health professionals have great intentions, even though the impact is harmful. And sometimes the intention is not the best.

We have a long way to go to understand ourselves as humans so that we can consistently help one another. I wish we, as a society, spent as much of our resources understanding ourselves as we do on technology! Maybe we could avoid wars, killings, torture, and other terrible interactions.
