Of course it is controversial. But you have completely mis- characterized gender affirmative treatment, which itself encompasses a variety of approaches. For many children gender is quite fluid. For most, early social transition is not a good choice. In my agency very few kids socially transition before puberty, when it is acknowledged even by Zucker that identity isn't likely to change. We help the kid find safe ways to authentically express themselves without a full transition. Where we differ from the CAMH approach is we would never insist a child conform nor tell the parents that they should do so. That is soul crushing for the child, very shaming. so I'm all for a variety of treatment approaches as long as they do not harm, and I have believed for many years that this treatment is harmful.
