The very highly gifted tend to be great at self-education. Self-education is rarely recognized in the way that an official curriculum or public examination is recognized. The point where we as a society began to only recognize "taught" and "certified" courses as proof of learning is the point where the person who learns best on their own determination became disempowered.
That process needs to be returned especially to the very highly gifted, because whether or not the concept is sexy under the prevailing political ideology of the day, these students DO have very different educational needs and they ARE at risk if those needs are obstructed.
