Key points
- Hope is about accepting the moment while creating space for resilience, strength, and possibilities.
- Empirical research strongly links hope to well-being, including life satisfaction and personal growth.
- Hope can become problematic if it is rigidly tied to specific outcomes or used as an expectation.
Lately, I’ve been receiving emails and messages from people who follow my work about hope—some share how it has helped them navigate uncertainty, while others question its place in a world filled with suffering and injustice.
I understand these doubts. When life feels difficult—whether personally, professionally, or globally—hope can seem elusive or even unrealistic. But I’ve come to realize that hope isn’t about denying reality or avoiding hardship; it’s about creating space for possibility, resilience, and inner strength.
Philosophers have long debated the role of hope—some view it as a powerful virtue that fuels human action and spiritual connection, while others dismiss it as mere desire, a liability, or even a cause of suffering. However, decades of empirical research consistently demonstrate its benefits, particularly its strong link to well-being, including interpersonal relationships, life satisfaction, and personal growth.
That said, hope can have its pitfalls if we cling too tightly to specific outcomes, resist change, or turn it into an expectation rather than a flexible, evolving mindset. True hope requires a balance of acceptance and openness—it holds our goals while allowing for life’s unfolding. With the right framework, hope becomes a guiding light—an active force that fuels courage, perspective, and action. It keeps us open to new opportunities and reminds us that change, healing, and transformation are always possible.
And that’s why I created the 10 principles of hope—a guide to help us stay grounded, inspired, and open to life’s ever-unfolding possibilities.
10 Principles of Hope
- Hope Comes From Within: Sustainable hope is created from the inside. The outside world may offer reasons to hope, but true resilience comes from cultivating it within yourself.
- Hope Is Unique to You: No one can dictate what you should hope for or whether it is realistic. Your journey is yours alone.
- Hope Thrives in Uncertainty: The future is unknown, and that’s where hope lives. Embracing uncertainty means embracing possibilities.
- Hope Is Strength, Not Weakness: Choosing hope over despair is an act of courage. It takes resilience to believe in change when fear and negativity seem louder.
- Hope Fuels Action: When you believe in the possibility of something better, you are more likely to take steps toward it. Hope is not passive—it inspires movement.
- Hope Expands Perspective: A rigid mindset closes doors, but hope opens them. When you hold onto hope, you allow yourself to see new opportunities, solutions, and ways forward.
- Hope Makes the Present Lighter: Even when facing challenges, hope allows you to experience joy, stay present, and navigate hardships with a more open heart.
- Hope Is Not Denial: Hope does not mean ignoring reality. It means acknowledging what is while also believing in the possibility of change, healing, and new beginnings.
- Hope Is a Practice: Like a muscle, hope needs to be nurtured. Questioning negative assumptions, shifting perspective, and reminding yourself of past resilience can strengthen it.
- Hope Holds the Future: The unknown is not a place of fear—it is a place where miracles, transformations, and new beginnings are born.
In the ever-unfolding story of life, the future remains unknown. But hope is never misplaced when we embrace flexibility and flow with change. After all, for all we know, maybe—just maybe—this very moment holds more than we can yet see. And maybe, the best is yet to come.
