Would You Know if a Parasite Were Controlling Your Mind?

This is the most successful parasite you have probably never thought about.

For a few years now, health organizations have been warning that Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans has reached dangerous levels [1], but newer statistics and projections point to some pretty alarming numbers. It looks like in some regions (Italy and Pakistan, for example), more than a third of the population is infected with this parasite, and overall, it has infected around a billion people worldwide, though the burden is unevenly distributed. Because of this, it could fairly be called the most common parasitic infection in humans [2].

Once someone is infected, the parasite stays with them for the rest of their life; there is no effective drug to fully clear it, and no vaccine has been developed to prevent it either. Given the evidence, even if still limited, of its clinical effects, and given how widespread it already is (and will almost certainly become more so), people and health organizations around the world need to pay much closer attention to this issue.

Toxoplasmosis life cycle

Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that absolutely needs cats to complete its reproductive cycle. The only place where it can reproduce sexually is inside a cat’s gut. The cat sheds these microscopic eggs (oocysts) in its feces, and that’s where the trouble starts. Those eggs get into soil, water, or food. A mouse comes along, nibbles on something contaminated, and then becomes infected.

Once inside the mouse, the parasite does not waste time. It converts into a fast-growing form called tachyzoites, which multiply like crazy and invade all sorts of tissues. The immune system eventually fights back, but the parasite has a backup plan: it transforms into a slow-growing form (bradyzoites) and forms cysts, mostly in the brain and muscle. These cysts are practically invisible to the immune system and can persist throughout the host’s life. Then the cycle closes when a cat eats that infected mouse, and the parasite starts reproducing all over again [3].

What it does to a mouse’s brain

Here is where the story gets horrible. Infected mice lose their natural, hardwired fear of cats. You put a normal mouse near cat urine, and it will escape. An infected mouse? It will hang around, almost curious. Scientists think this is not random; it is the parasite manipulating the mouse’s behavior to make it easier for a cat to catch it, which benefits the parasite.

But it is not just about fear. Infected mice also show memory problems. They perform worse in maze tests and have trouble remembering locations they have already explored.

The damage seems to stem from chronic inflammation in the brain, especially in the hippocampus—the region critical for learning and spatial memory. Some studies also point to altered dopamine signaling, which could explain the risk-taking behavior. Different strains of the parasite cause varying degrees of impairment, suggesting that the parasite’s genetic makeup matters too.

Toxoplasmosis may not just be about Tom and Jerry

With the permission of cat lovers, we examine some evidence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans, despite the limited evidence available. This parasite appears to have genes that directly affect dopamine production in the host’s brain, such as dopaminergic pathways in the mesolimbic region, and this may explain some of the mental effects of Toxoplasma [4].

The strongest evidence in humans links Toxoplasma gondii to schizophrenia. Individuals with schizophrenia are more likely to have antibodies against the parasite than healthy folks. Some estimates say it could be involved in more than 20 percent of cases. There is also some connection to bipolar disorder, severe depression, and even suicide attempts. But here is the catch: this is all correlation. Just because they show up together does not mean the parasite causes the illness. It could be something else entirely.

Some observations also suggest that, in some people, the infection may be linked to greater risk-taking at work. Sounds a lot like what happens to mice, right? Less fear, more daring. Interestingly, it has been proposed that people who get into car accidents are more likely to be infected [5].

However, newer, better-designed studies have failed to find these connections. Some scientists think that if there is any effect, it probably comes from the brain inflammation caused by the infection, not from the parasite directly tinkering with our heads.

What should we do?

The presence of Toxoplasma gondii in a significant number of the human population, along with its increasing prevalence due to close contact with pets and lack of an approved vaccine or treatment, logically compels us to reconsider its potential hazards. In the place I live, I see some people feeding the stray cats in the streets and parks every day. The stray cat population has markedly increased in recent years. Although semi-cooked meat is an important cause of infection, living near cats is becoming a more important cause of toxoplasmosis.

Owners of pet cats should take care of their pets’ examination tests and vaccinations. The health organization should pay attention to ungoverned street cats and warn people about them. In addition, they should program for the control of the stray cat population in urban areas. New research should be conducted on the hazardous effects of the infection in humans and search for new medications. Education of the common people is important to attract attention.

Although the mental effects of toxoplasmosis remain unclear, its physical adverse effects are more proven. Toxoplasmosis has a confirmed effect on infertility in women and causes lasting damage to the retina. Those two facts alone are reason enough to take it seriously. Everything else—the behavioral speculation, the mind-control angle—is interesting, but it’s secondary. The real urgency comes from what we already know for sure.

However, the fascinating question is this: If we are infected with a presumed mind parasite, can we sense that we are occupied and controlled by a foreigner? The answer is no. The occupied person feels that they are the agent of their own thoughts, choices, and behaviors. For instance, our microbiome—which is not classified as a parasite—sometimes influences our food preferences, tendency to exercise, and other behaviors. Yet, we never consider ourselves to be under the control of distinct living beings.
