Key points
- Age-gap relationships come with particular challenges.
- A study investigated how age gaps affect relationships dynamics.
- The researchers found seven major challenges in age-gap relationships.
- The challenges included communications problems, power imbalances, and social stigma.
Compared to relationships in which both partners are roughly the same age, age-gap relationships—in which one partner is 10 or more years older than the other—can sometimes face some distinct challenges. These include, for example, social stigma, as families or friends of the couple, or others in their social or professional circles, may see the age gap in the relationship as something negative. Other challenges may include communication problems (if a member of Generation Z is dating a Boomer, they may use very different words and phrases), power imbalances in the relationships (for example, when the older partner earns much more money), or mismatches in life or career goals.
To what extent these points actually influence relationship dynamics and the stability of the relationship had, until recently, been largely unclear.
How age differences influence relationship dynamics and stability
A study recently published in the International Journal of Human Research and Social Science Studies focused on identifying major challenges and general topics in age-gap relationships compared to relationships without age gaps (Lomotey, 2025). To this end, the author used a so-called mixed-methods approach, combining a questionnaire-based survey of 200 couples with in-depth interviews about relationship dynamics with 30 couples selected based on their age structure.
In this sample, couples without an age gap were compared with couples with an age gap. Couples in which the older partner was a man and couples in which the older partner was a woman were included. In the interviews, the couples were asked about many aspects of their relationships, such as whether they perceived any stigma, how they communicated with each other, and how their life goals aligned, among other things.
7 major challenges in age-gap-relationships
The psychological analysis of the interviews revealed both positive and negative aspects of age gap relationships. The 7 most important challenges were:
- Communication gaps: Differences in language use, or preferences for specific ways of communication (such as texting vs. talking), can lead to relationship difficulties.
- Differences in emotional maturity: While younger people often perceive the emotional maturity of older partners as a positive, emotional immaturity in younger partners can be frustrating for older partners.
- Power imbalance: When the older partner has higher perceived power in a relationship due to a larger income, this can be perceived as frustrating by the younger partner, especially if the older partner is controlling or makes too many decisions that affect both partners by themselves. However, some younger partners also found it positive when an older partner made all financial decisions.
- Differences in long-term career or life goals: Especially if partners have a very substantial age gap, they may show significant differences in their goals. For example, an older partner may want to settle down and plan retirement, while a younger partner wants to see the world and build a career. This may lead to friction and frustration in a relationship.
- Emotional burnout: When the older partner has significant health issues or similar challenges, the younger partner can face a higher amount of emotional and physical challenges; for example, when they have to raise kids almost alone or take care of the older partner if they need support. This can lead to emotional burnout in the relationship.
- Social stigma: Many people in age-gap relationships faced gossip or even disapproval in their social circles, especially if an older woman was in a relationship with a younger man. The constant need to justify their love can be stressful for a couple.
- Gender double standards: As many cultures are more approving of heterosexual relationships in which the man is older than the woman, couples in which the woman is older than the man face an extra high level of stress due to gossip and stigma.
As this research suggests, age-gap relationships come with distinct challenges that partners should acknowledge and handle in an emotionally mature way.
