When Thinking Becomes Optional

What to teach when technology starts thinking for us.

Minutes into teaching my business school class, I asked what seemed like an innocent question:

What is one word that describes how you feel about AI right now?

One word. That's it.

My students looked up, looked down, looked anywhere to avoid eye contact. Silence.

"I promise," I said, "this is a safe space." Something I'd repeat throughout the course—and I meant it.

Then the answers came quickly, and the energy in the room shifted as they arrived. You could feel the sheen of performance dropping away. They had permission to tell the truth.

Excited.

Overwhelmed.

Curious.

Uneasy.

Confused.

Terrified.

Chaos.

I walked in thinking I was teaching Marketing with Humanity in the Age of AI. What I didn't fully grasp until that moment is that I was also teaching a room of frayed nervous systems.

And marketing, for better or worse, is a strangely intimate place to watch the future collide with psychology.

Why Marketing Feels It First

In plenty of white-collar fields, AI can still feel like an idea: provocative, philosophical, removed from your day-to-day job.

In marketing, it already feels operational. Generative AI systems can draft campaign concepts, write variations, produce images and videos, create strategy outlines, summarize research, and automate workflows that used to belong to junior teams. That's happening now.

The business incentives are obvious. McKinsey estimates that generative AI could raise marketing productivity by 5 to 15 percent of total marketing spend, translating to roughly $463 billion annually.

And once you're staring at that kind of number, the rest of the conversation changes, too: the job forecasts, the re-org rumors, the "doing more with less" logic that's already seeped into white-collar life. The World Economic Forum projected that 23 percent of jobs will change by 2027, with 69 million jobs created and 83 million eliminated.

So, of course, my students assumed they were walking into a class to learn about tools. Prompting, workflows, synthetic personas, customer journeys, content engines. Whatever the current stack demands.

They weren't wrong to want that. When the future feels unstable, the mind reaches for what looks like certainty. It starts scanning for something you can grab.

And this is where it gets really interesting, and, honestly, a little heartbreaking.

The Safety Trap

Under uncertainty, people can become less thoughtful and more procedural. They look for the right formats, the right answers, the safest moves. Curiosity narrows. Risk starts to feel almost irresponsible. When you're trying to protect your future, originality can begin to feel like an unnecessary expense.

Now introduce machines that can produce polished, plausible answers in seconds.

Beyond automating tasks, generative AI seduces the part of the psyche that wants relief from anxiety. It offers language on demand and, with it, a kind of counterfeit confidence. The output sounds like competence, which makes it easy to confuse productivity with thinking.

That's the tension I could feel in the room before we ever opened a laptop: smart, ambitious professionals learning to live as editors of machine-generated output rather than authors of their own point of view.

So when I built this course, I made a decision that shaped everything. I was not going to run laps through the latest AI marketing tactics.

The practical reason is obvious: The field is moving so fast that what's "best practice" today will look quaint by next month. And many of my students, already working, are closer to the tools than any professor will ever be.

But the deeper reason was psychological. Tool training addresses speed and output. It doesn't address the vulnerability AI amplifies.

That vulnerability is our agency.

And it's not a student problem. It's a human problem.

The classroom is just an easy place to watch in real time. The same safety reflex shows up at desks and in conference rooms. When the stakes are high and the pace feels punishing, we reach for whatever reduces uncertainty fastest. For the first time, that relief arrives as a finished paragraph—a confident point of view—before we've done the inner work of forming our own.

What AI Can't Teach

Agency can sound like a lofty word until you strip it down to what it really is: a cognitive and emotional capacity. It's the ability to hold your own attention, form your own judgments, make choices you can stand behind, and tolerate the discomfort of not outsourcing your brain the moment pressure rises.

When that capacity weakens, you can look competent on paper while quietly becoming interchangeable in practice.

And once I named that as the real curriculum, the class became clearer. Still a marketing class, sure, but even more a class about thinking and choosing in an environment designed to make both of those things easier to avoid.

If I had to boil the semester down, it came to four human capacities that belong in every modern classroom, whether the topic is marketing, finance, biology, or literature.

Discernment
We're surrounded by content and ideas at a volume no brain evolved to metabolize. Generative AI turns that fire hose into a flood. When everything is available all of the time, the scarce resource becomes our own judgment: taste, signal detection, the ability to sense psychological weight versus well-intentioned filler.

This is why I kept returning to what I call Signal vs. Slop—an approach to identifying what feels human and what simply performs like it's human. I'm not trying to be cute. This is the new literacy, and the future will reward people who can tell the difference.

Authorship
One of the most under-discussed psychological effects of modern technology is how quickly we hand off our cognitive labor to things that look helpful. Research suggests that even the mere presence of a smartphone can reduce available cognitive capacity, as if part of the mind is silently allocated to resisting temptation. And when people expect future access to information, they become more likely to remember where to find it than to encode it internally.

That offloading pattern has been building for years. Generative AI accelerates it dramatically, because it does more than store information; it produces interpretation. It will happily draft your thinking before you've had the discomfort of doing it yourself.

So we talked in class about how to work with AI as a co-creator without surrendering the most important part of the work: deciding what you actually believe.

Differentiation
Marketing has always been about staking out a distinct point of view. Yet everywhere you look right now, cultural output is flattening. Brand voice smoothing into sameness, thought leadership collapsing into templates, the same confident claims echoing across industries.

Averages scale beautifully. Human distinctiveness doesn't scale at all. It has to be chosen.

So we treated distinctiveness as a personal pursuit. Standing out is less about cleverness, more about making real choices: what you care about, what you reject, what you refuse to say even if it would perform well.

Psychological Safety
This one surprised me, and it probably shouldn't have.

Nobody learns well in a state of threat. They comply, perform, hide ignorance, and avoid risk. Psychological safety, defined as a shared belief that a group is safe for risk-taking, has long been linked to learning behavior in teams.

I didn't set out to create a vibe. I was trying to build a learning environment where students could be honest, uncertain, and intellectually adventurous without paying a social price for it.

That turned out to be the container that made everything else possible.

What I Didn't Expect

After the semester ended, I got emails that made me reread them slowly, the way you read something when you can feel it telling the truth about what happened.

One student wrote: "Every session made an impact in my life. It made me pause, think about what really matters, and reflect on the kind of life I want to build."

Another told me they were "mourning the end of class" because the psychological safety in that room was unlike anything they'd experienced in any other class.

I love that the notes are not feedback on a syllabus. They're evidence of what this moment demands.

We keep debating whether AI will take jobs. Of course, it will reshape them, and some will disappear. That matters. But the risk is that it erodes our practice of thinking, one relieved moment at a time.

Still, what I experienced in my classroom felt like a different crisis: a generation trying to prepare for the future by reaching for the safest script, just as the world starts scanning for emerging leaders who can think originally, choose deliberately, and speak with human truth.

There's a choice right now.

We can focus on more tool training: efficient, current, superficially employable. Or we can zero in on something more psychologically necessary: places where we can practice agency, discernment, authorship, and courage—because those capacities don't expire every time the interface updates.

I used to assume we'd pick those up along the way. Most of us did, almost by accident. You had to write your own sentences and defend your own ideas. You learned what you believe by risking being wrong in front of other people.

Those moments are getting harder to come by.

And that's exactly why we have to practice them on purpose—at school, at work, in the tiny moments when the easy answer is available and the human one costs more.

Here's the question worth asking, today: Where in your life have you started choosing relief over authorship?
