Gacy's abuse was far worse then I originally thought. Being beaten with a 2 by 4 for stealing flowers from a jewish cemetery. His father then attempted to beat him while he was a baby. Same with Charles Whitman, his father almost drowned him, and tried to beat him as a baby. Gacy's abuse of course was way more severe. One of the most disgusting beatings in my mind is when he had a seizure during a beating and his father continued to beat him and yelled at him "YOUR FAKING IT!" Gacy admitted he was being molested by a family friend and what happened? Gacy's father knocked the thanksgiving table down, tried to kill the family friend, and then blamed Gacy for the molestation. This was constant humiliation and severe beatings. Far worse then I originally thought. Gacy during the murdered liked to humiliate the victims. Calling them names, even urinating on them. At least according to one account he urinated on a victim to further humiliate them. I've always found Gacy hilarious. Doug Clark is also hilarious. I also think it's very revealing when he said "they paint this image that I was this monster who picked up like these altar boys and swatted em like flies." or he says "they killed them selves." "because they were stupid." and his belief that certain teenagers who looked a certain way [his preference] were homosexual...his excuse of "If you look at my work schedule you'd know I was never out there." and blaming the smell on his dog urinating on the floor and claiming the bodies were planted in the crawlspace by his employees. It's laughable and pathetic. His excuses make me laugh [scoff] every time. He is a clown after all...
The number one motive for mass shootings is revenge. That is a fact. Mass murderers are similar in a lot of ways to serial killers. Usually the massacre is triggered by a "loss" ie fired from a job, loss of a loved one, etc. Something that would cause stress. The trigger is when they say "I've failed...and now I'm gonna get back."
Criminologist James Fox explained the mindset as this.
"they think they are being treated unfairly, and if that is your perception. You must punish the people you blame, because they are blocking your ability to achieve that American dream." James Huberty is a perfect example of that.
Elliot Rodgers certainly wanted the American dream of having a gaggle of hot sexy blonde women all around him eager to have sex with him as much as he pleased. He wanted to be a success with women and went to Isle La Vista and the local college exactly for that reason. He even used the term "retribution." and said "I gave humanity too many chances." and despite his blatant narcassism it's absolutely clear that he wanted revenge against not just society and humanity but the people who rejected him the most and made him feel worthless and had what he wanted. Men who can get women, and hot blonde women who were gleefully laughing at his virginity and loneliness. According to his perception of course. Cho Seung Hui apparently felt the same. Clear case of paranoia. In fact Elliot most probably had a schizotypal personality disorder and part of that disorder is of course paranoia.
We constantly see this theme of "I want revenge. I want to get pay back." and yet what is the over all response from society "no notoriety" "oh they just wanted to be famous."
I have not seen a shred of evidence that they WOULD NOT of done it if it wasn't for the notoriety and mainstream media obsession.
Here your saying humilation is also a factor, at least in serial killers. It's also a factor in mass shootings. You also pointed out "triggers" well "triggers" also play a very large role in mass shootings and YET.....just ignore all of that. Just focus on "no notoriety" and that will help us....HOW?! Okay, let's go with Anderson Cooper "history should not remember the killer but should remember the victims." Okay, let's do that. Let's play this false dichotomy game....we only remember the victims. NOW WHAT?! What does that tell us?! What can I learn from that?! Very little. Sure as hell doesn't tell me anything about WHY these things happen. Sure as hell doesn't create a dialog about what we can do to actually prevent these crimes. Other then the most basic "the killer had mental problems and used an AR-15." yeah, that tells me NOTHING. I need MORE INFORMATION.
The total hypocrisy of society. Stephan Paddock's motive has been looked at by law enforcement, the FBI, etc. His motive has been a complete mystery. Adam Lanza's motive was also a mystery until the news paper outlet sued the state for the right to the documents the police HID from the public. Then the documents are released and they paint a far better picture. Instead of the police TELLING US, we can look for our selves and experts were FINALLY given access to useful information and what did we learn? Lanza said he had nothing but "scorn for humanity." So instead of GUESS WORK, we got the motive straight from Lanza's mouth [in written format] he hated humanity and his crime was a crime against society, against humanity. We never EVER were told that by the police.
Back to Paddock "We want the motive". Total hypocrites. The fact of the matter is that even if Paddock DID write down his motive, then the pandering media and "no notoriety" would complain and those who believe in "no notoriety" would complain and in terms of the media who pander to it. CNN will do this "we aren't saying the killers name." and I love when James Fox went onto CNN and called them out on their BS and CNN showed their REAL colors.
CNN reporter: James I sure you that 1.I'm not saying his name and I'm in no way trying to anything other then report -
James Fox: It's not the name that's the problem [it's the obsessive 24/hour news cycle]
James Fox: I've worked on investigations and have done profiles of mass killers [and used their names and suicide notes.] and sure it's helpful to know why this happened, but the amount of publicity about this man, I don't need to mention his name. Everyone knows his name, is a little bit excessive, and in terms of reporting; this constant talk about 'it's the largest, the record number of victims killed.' would it be any less of a tragedy if it weren't a record? I think we sometimes have embellished and some hyperbole there.
CNN reporter: But it's a fact.
James Fox: It is a fact, BUT HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO HEAR THAT FACT?! HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO HEAR IT?!
Cnn reporter doing typical "no notoriety" media response, the hypocrisy is hilarious. I thought you were for no notoriety? looks to me like it's pandering and a gimmick: Are you gonna be - professor I don't think your - who's gonna be the judge of what the limit of okay and not okay?
To me they are using no notoriety to muddy the water.
The issue is MASS MEDIA, sensationalism, OBSESSIVE reporting.
I only care about body count in terms of definitions. Like "2 or more." or "4 or more killed." in terms of mass shootings or "3 or more" or "2 or more" in terms of serial killers.
James Fox said that when James Holmes shot up the movie theater in Aurora he got a news reporter who asked him a bunch of pointless stupid questions to be accurate and to sensationalize it. She asked him "isn't the biggest mass murder?' and he told her no and brought up Cho Seung Hui, Andrew Kehoe, Anders Brievk, and Timothy Mcveigh.
Eventually she said "can I say that it's the biggest in terms of people killed and injured [about 70 people injured and 12 killed] in America?" and James Fox explained "'I said 'yeah you can say that' because she's gonna leave with the fact that it's a record."
I must also point out that James Fox's friend and colleague Jack Levin wrote a book where they mention No notoriety.
"Examining the killer's motives for these vicious murders can hopefully lead to better understanding about why they occur. Focusing on the horrendous consequences of victims will do little to explain the causes of such violence."
Absolutely correct. "we don't think history should remember the killer but should remember the victims." WHY NOT BOTH?!
So yeah, humilation is a way bigger factor then "notoriety"
Wanting to be powerful, to "be a god", to overcome those feelings of powerlessness and inadequacy are far bigger factors for serial killer and mass murder then "I want to be famous." if anything the "i want to be famous." is on the very bottom of motivations to the point where I would argue it would be irrelevant. Hitler knew he was gonna be famous, notorious. His secretary hated his mustache and asked him why he didn't shave it off. He said it would become a famous trend because "I wore it." Clearly Hitler wanted some fame and notoriety, but is that why he became antisemitic? Is that why he hated the jews? is that why he started WW2 and went after homosexuals, gypsies, etc? Was fame really a defining factor? I highly doubt it and of course Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold both admired and idolized Hitler. He represented power....and yet NO ONE blames Hitler for what happened. Other then creationist trying to blame the teaching of evolution on the massacre and of course Hitler was a creationist and they only blame Hitler in that sense, not in the "no notoriety" sense. No one is saying we shouldn't talk about Hitler because two kids in Colorado admired him and influenced them. Why say that about other notorious killers? Total hypocrisy and special pleading. What makes Hitler so damn special?!
I would think abuse, humiliation, bullying, inadequacy, feelings of powerlessness, seeing where the power is coming from [family members who are abusing them, peers who bully them.] even in some cases seeming them as role models such as the case of Ted Bundy who saw his grandfather as a role model and he was a violent man who abused his daughters and tortured cats in front of Bundy. Personality disorders, social and economic stresses, etc. All of those play a far bigger role then "I want to be famous." or music, or video games, or porn, or anti depressants, or anything else that is unjustly blamed.
