Sex at Dawn With Dan Savage

Celebrating a year of Sex at Dawn with Dan Savage.

It's been an interesting week here in Sex at Dawnland. First, the paperback edition of our book was released on Tuesday, exactly a year after the hardcover first hit the shelves of Amazon (and a very few brick and mortar stores). And what a year it's been! This seems a good opportunity for Cacilda and I to thank everyone for reading this blog who sent a link to a friend, dropped a comment, and especially those of you who grabbed a copy of Sex at Dawn. We're beyond gratified at the response our book has received.

At the top of the list of people, we would love to thank sits Mr. Dan Savage. It was his very enthusiastic, very public support of our book that first set it a-blipping on many radar screens. As I told Dan personally if Cassie and I had any plans to do any procreating, we'd name our first-born after him, but as our breeding days are done, if we ever get another cat, it'll be called Savage for sure. When I passed through Seattle last fall on a mini-publicity tour for the book, Dan and Terry put me up for a few nights. No question, one of the high points of my 2010 was crashing in Dan and Terry's basement.

In light of the above, you'll understand how happy I've been to see Dan's public profile rising over the past year. The It Gets Better project perfectly exemplifies Dan and Terry's gift for combining intelligence, compassion, and humor in support of those who need it. Listening to this week's podcast, I was once more struck by how well he combines an obstinate, take-no-prisoners insistence on plain honesty with a sincere concern for the human frailties that plague us all. No easy feat, that. The fact that more and more people are choosing to engage with Dan as a serious man with serious ideas is one of the few trends I can point to these days that actually makes me hopeful for American culture. For that, I'm especially grateful.
