Environmental sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. April 22nd is Earth Day. It’s a good time to think about our personal practices and environmental sustainability. What are you doing right and what could you be doing be better when it comes to environmental sustainability?   • Number a piece of paper from 1 to 50 (the quiz is 50 items)
  • Use the scale to indicate how frequently you perform the behaviors described, writing the scale number next to the item number​.


  • 0=Never
  • 1=Rarely (you only do it about 25% of the time you could do it)
  • 2= Sometimes (you do it about 50% of the time you could do it)
  • 3=Usually (you do it about 75% of the time you could do it)
  • 4=Always (you do it almost every time or every time you could do it)
  • If an action doesn’t apply to you, then write down “NA” (non-applicable) or if you don’t know, put “DK” (don’t know)

Excellent 3.6 to 4.0 You’re clearly doing what you can to be environmentally responsible. You’re an inspiration to us all.

Good 3 to 3.5 You’re doing a good job of behaving in an environmentally responsible way.

Fair 2.6 to 3 You’re doing some things right but could do a lot more to reduce your negative impact on the environment.

Poor 2-2.5 You’re not doing much to reduce your negative impact on the environment. Will you consider adopting a few more environmentally responsible practices?

Abysmal (below 2) To avoid and reduce negative environmental impacts, we all need to do our own small part. Will you consider adopting a few environmentally responsible practices?

Look over the items and mark those that you scored low on (0, 1, or 2). Initial next to those behaviors you will seriously try to adopt so that you can do your part to promote environmental sustainability. For each one you select, create a plan of action—what do you need to do to make it happen? Make a pledge, post reminders, set up your home, car, or workplace to make it easier to remember or do the environmentally sustainable behavior.
