Thoughts on Memoir Writing from Mary Karr
The acclaimed author gave a great talk in San Miguel, Mexico. I was there.

I haven't yet received the video of Mary Karr's opening address at the San Miguel Writers Conference, but I took notes! Here I am in a photo with her at the conference (I taught there) and below are a few of her words of wisdom:
All memoir is essentially about having your heart broken.
My mother was married seven times. Before she died I asked her, "At what point do you say 'Maybe it's not about them?'"
Writing memoir is knocking yourself out with your own fist.
The most dangerous thing to write is that moment when you had hope.
Prompt: Write about a time your heart was broken.
