A loving relationship can be an oasis in uncertain times, but nurturing it requires attention, honesty, openness, vulnerability, and gratitude.

"Man cannot stand a meaningless life." -- C.G. Jung
Thanks for writing this article!
Sometimes I think I'm crazy when thinking things of this nature might really be true: aliens, demons, ghosts, etc as projections.
Reading PT, again, reminds me of my own sanity. Anytime I bring up ANYTHING along these lines with friends in discussion (I'm in my early 20s), I get typed as a crazy person.
Glad you found the article encouraging. There are more things in heaven and earth, Kathryn, than are dreamed of in your (and your friends) philosophy. But bear in mind that a projection manifesting as a visual hallucination or illusory misinterpretation of objective reality is not an objective fact, despite its meaningful subjective reality. Still, Jung believed that the psyche could manifest itself in the physical world, a power we commonly see, for example, in what we call psychosomatic disorders: psychological conflicts that affect the physical body. Now the question of whether the psyche can actually "create" or "manifest" something like a UFO in outer reality for all to see and photograph is a relevant one. Still, the distinction between subjective and objective reality remains crucial in such matters for keeping one's feet on terra firma.
Life just sounds more exciting when you hear about things out of the ordinary. I wonder how many people who have been abducted by aliens had a happy and fulfilling life before their capture. My guess is not many. It seems that the lower we feel the more attracted we are to higher ideas.
Thanks for the response Dr. Diamond.
I definitely understand the distinction you elevate between subjection and objective reality. I have personal (and unfortunately somewhat terrifying) experience being in manic and psychotic states (marijuana induced (don't worry, those days are over)), which first got me interested in these ideas (since I firmly believe my experiences had everything to do with the projections of Freud's idea of the unconscious).
Your article interested me most because these moments of crazy got me thinking more broadly and (after researching and reading about such states and others' experiences in them) got me extrapolating ideas onto the notion of a the collective consciousness, the collective mind.
I am a Deist, generally, so my intellectual ideas about the subject work in that frame.
But working with Jung's ideas of the collective unconscious, and knowing what my own mind is capable of in the midst of manic and psychotic states, well, I felt it was not a huge jump to speculate that these occurrences (those which you discuss in your article, and other type of paranormal occurrences and general occult folklore) might be some analogous 'subjective', but collective representations, in what we know as our physical reality.
A Berkeley education left me insatiably curious... these types of things end up as mere daily musings.
All this being said, I look forward to anything else you have to say about the general topic.
Methinks there are a few topics more worthy of psychological exploration. The psychology of supermarket tabloids, or past life regresion therapy.
This is strangley and suprisingly I think potentially one of the most interesting and important areas of psycho-spiritual research today. This is perhaps something as profound as a change in the way in which humans, concieve of and potentially relate to the idea and perhaps the fact of the divine. This has not happened for 2000 years and represents a potential evolution of consiousness and higher differentiation.
I definately did find the article above interesting concerning UFOs and meaning.
Although I do find UFOs interesting, I must contend that I am a skeptic. Starting with the alien abduction craze in the late nineties, I set out to research UFOs and began to write a book.
My intentions were not just being skeptical. I wanted to explore why believers needed to believe. In other words, how did UFO mythology reflect today's times.
It's interesting how you pointed out that both science and religion are both myths. In "How Modern Society Invented UFOs," available through amazon.com, I explore the need for magic in a scientific age. The development of UFOs developed in coincidence with scientific progress.
Theyre tracked on radar, filmed, filmed in space from the shuttle, and have disabled nuclear missiles. You must research a topic before you write about it. You must know basics of the topic, like what the robertson panel was, or who the witnesses are and what the evidence is. Its a clownish article otherwise
Good for you to write on this most controversial of subjects.
However I do think you need to look into it a bit more as there is a physical component to the phenomena.
I do not deny that there is a psychological component either and perhaps some experiences are the result of delusional subjective psychoses.
BUT - and it is a HUGE BUT - one not really reflected in your article...There is a physical side to all of this.
Edgar Mitchell - 6th Man on moon and Gordon Cooper - another astronaut are both on camera being interviewed saying there are real aliens floating around.
Might they be lying? Maybe. But what if they are not?
Further look to the work of Stanton Friedman and Dr. Steven Greer for more down to earth/physical and rational investigations.
Stanton F. has carried out 40 plus years of research into the subject - he was a nuclear physicist - focussing on the Majestic documents. Do you know what these are I wonder?
Dr. Steven Greer has assembled a large number of very senior mainly military people attesting to the comments of a previous person here concerning multiple sightings by pilots, ground troops and radar all confirming each other.
Watch some of these videos:
And you will no doubt have the overall impression that this is a highly complex phenomena which DOES have a physical facet.
Dr. Roger Leir of Ca, USA has removed so called implants that have been sent to the most advanced scientific laboratories (HP Crystallography in Palo Alto I think) for analysis and the conclusion?
The implants are made from metal alloys we do not understand - and are of a technology (metallic/organic hybrid which possibly integrates into the human CNS) not from this earth.
All of that which I have said can be checked by anyone reading this simply by watching interviews with the people mentioned here.
Just go and watch interviews that are online with those names mentioned.
Do not believe me.
BUT please DO research this.
There is a physical side to all of this.
Thanks for your comments. And Merry Christmas! Your point is well taken: I have interest in this subject, and have seen and heard some fairly convincing evidence that there is, as you say, a physical manifestation of this phenomenon. I am particularly impressed with the incident at Rendalsham Forest Air Base in England about 40 years ago, various reports of sightings by trained airline pilots, and the huge object witnessed flying over Phoenix a few years ago. So I do not deny there is likely some "UFO" activity in our skies, and has been for a long time. Of course, there has also been a great deal of faked evidence. My focus in this article, however, was on the psychological and possibly spiritual significance and implications of this phenomenon.
Merry Xmas to you too.
I take your point about the focus of your article.
Some researchers think that some of the phenomena maybe caused by beings from other dimensions...Other names for these dimensions might be the astral realm or even the Bardo states as referred to by The Tibetans.
UFO researcher Jacques Vallée put forward this inter dimensional hypothesis.
Another idea along these lines is that the modern Alien Grey abduction event is an age-old event reclothed for modern times. Some have stated that the demons of the Bible are the same as these Alien Greys - same psychic phenomena but in a modern garb.
Some people think that some of these beings might exist in aspects of existence that many (if not all) religions talk about and encourage us to enter/prepare for. The Bardo states being what we supposedly journey through after death before re-birth according to the theory of reincarnation and Tibetan thought.
Dr. Rick Strassman wrote a book called: "DMT: The Spirit Molecule" DMT is produced in the brain naturally. It has been linked to encounters with non-human intelligences. Some similar to The Greys.
The Roswell, New Mexico incident - 1947 & what Lieutenant Colonel (United States) Philip J. Corso has to say are really interesting.
I wanted to emphasise the physical aspects to all this in my previous comment as it is easy for people to dismiss this subject as only being something people imagine.
Mark Twain said:
“It's no wonder that truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense.”
A very interesting article, it makes you think, but I'm still none the wiser about my ufo experiences. I saw a 'flying saucer' type UFO in 2011, & then in 2013 I saw a completely different type of UFO in broad daylight. Both seen from the back garden of where I lived. Both amazing, & baffling. I am just left with the memory of those experiences but no explanation, No answers. When you've seen a UFO you don't want to dwell on it because it will drive you crazy, but at the same time it's something you can never forget. It's an experience that leaves you with more questions than answers; who/what are they, where do they come from, why are they here, why me?
Thanks very much for sharing your experiences! I, for one, would like to hear more about them if you care to discuss this in more detail here. For example, what was your state of mind at the times of these sightings? Were you hoping to see a UFO? What exactly did they look like, sound like, smell like, and behave like? How long did the sighting last? Were there others who reported seeing these UFOs at the time? Was there any similarity between the craft you saw and the ones depicted in the woodcut about the purported Nuremberg battle between various sized and shaped ships?
First some background information. I live in Yorkshire, England where I was born and raised. I am now aged 55. I have had an interest in the UFO phenomenon for many years, having read accounts in books and magazines, and watched a great many video documentaries on the subject. I always thought that there must be something to it as the accounts seemed very convincing, in many cases too bizarre to have been invented, and the witnesses come across as being very genuine and convincing, many of them credible people such as airline pilots, military, police officers etc. as well as many ordinary folk.
At the time of the first UFO sighting in 2011, it was a Saturday night in late July, I think the 29th, at around 10.30pm. I had spent the evening alone in my apartment passing the time watching youtube videos, looking on ebay and generally messing around on the internet. I had consumed no alcohol or any drugs of any kind. I had just made myself a cup of tea when my upstairs neighbour rang and said he and another friend were out on the patio in the back garden and would I like to come join them. I rolled a cigarette (tobacco not weed!) and took my cup of tea outside on the patio and sat down on one of the garden chairs whilst my friends were stood chatting a few feet away. I looked up at the night sky, not expecting to see any UFOs but just to look at the stars, but there were no stars visible as it was summertime, had only just got dark, was cloudy, and there was light pollution from the city, so the sky didn’t look all that dark, certainly not pitch black. Then over in the distance, quite low in the sky I could see one very bright star, or so I thought, and I assumed it must be a planet like maybe Jupiter, though I don’t know much about Astronomy and no idea if Jupiter was supposed to be visible or even if it was in the right part of the sky to be a planet. I continued to look at the star, taken by how very bright it was, and it stood out because there were no other stars visible and it was also like I said quite low down on the horizon. Then I noticed this ‘star’ was moving, when at first it looked stationary, and because it was roughly in the direction of Leeds/Bradford Airport I then assumed it must be a plane, and I thought to myself any minute now I’ll be able to see it’s flashing navigation/aviation lights that all aircraft have. The ‘star’ continued moving and was heading in my direction, still no aircraft lights visible, it just got bigger and brighter as it got closer to my position and yet still maintained it’s appearance as a very bright star. I could see by now that this light was not in space (like a star or planet) but was beneath the cloud cover at a low altitude. It still displayed no lights that you see on normal aircraft. There was also no sound, it was totally silent, whereas usually if a jet plane goes over we can hear it, same if it’s the police helicopter. By now I was getting more curious and was quite puzzled. The ‘star’ got close to my position but was not directly overhead when it suddenly stopped in mid-air, just hovering in one spot completely still in the sky. My friends were still chatting to each other and at that point I excitedly said “what the f***’s that, ‘cos it aint a plane?” whilst pointing up at it. In that instant, as I said that, the light of this ‘star’ suddenly diminished inwards on itself, like it shrank, but simultaneously stretched up into the sky into a long white line like a vertical laser beam emanating from its original position, and sitting at the top of this beam of light was a circular, saucer-shaped disc. I was looking at it from beneath, at its underside. I could see the contours of its shape, i.e. pretty much like a saucer. Its surface looked metallic and had the appearance of gun-metal, a dull grey, not shiny like chrome or stainless steel. The beam of light then disappeared from the bottom to the top, and when it reached the disc there was a brief flash of light beneath the disc itself and it suddenly and very quickly ascended vertically, punching a hole in the clouds as it did so. It travelled upwards at a fast speed and saw it disappear to a tiny speck before it was lost from view. It must have climbed more than 50,000ft in 5 to 10 seconds before I lost sight of it because it had gone too high to see, like it was heading straight up and out of the atmosphere. All this took place in total silence. My neighbour said “where you looking, what you seen?” and he looked up as I was saying ”there, there!” and pointing to it as it went upwards. He caught a glimpse of it as it went but only saw something small, a dark speck travelling upwards very fast, and he hadn’t seen the whole thing as I had. The other friend present, a woman who has poor eye-sight, didn’t look up quickly enough or in the right place, and didn’t manage to see anything. I would say at a rough guess it might have been at least 30ft in diameter, but maybe more depending on how high it was (before it ascended), it could well have been 50ft diameter, perhaps as much as 100ft, but I would say in general probably about the size of a helicopter or a small plane. It had no lights, there were no windows or portholes, no visible markings, no landing gear beneath it, and it made no sound. It also left no contrail.
I felt astonished, amazed, astounded, shocked at what I had just seen. I had not gone out there with any expectation to see or even look for a UFO. I was not thinking about UFOs. Afterwards I felt puzzled, baffled, curious. I also felt like maybe it somehow knew that I was looking at it, like I had attracted it to come in my direction by the very act of noticing it and taking an interest in it. I also felt somewhat privileged to have seen it. Afterwards though I started to wonder who or what these Beings are, where do they come from, are they from another planet or another Dimension, or both? what do they want, do they have good intentions, are they good or evil or neither - simply neutral observers, or are they Demonic?, and that thought kind of disturbed me so I said a prayer for protection. I had no strange after effects, I slept quite normally, no dreams or nightmares that I can remember or am aware of. I do not think I was I abducted or anything like that. I wasn’t aware of any unusual sounds, smells or any other sensations at the time of the sighting.
The second UFO experience took place in 2013 on a Sunday, and it was actually April 1st – yeah, I know, April Fool’s Day! But I swear this was certainly no April Fools joke on my part and I can’t see how anyone else could have possibly perpetrated such a hoax. It was a bright sunny day, blue skies, a tiny little bit of small cloud drifting past in the distance but not so much. Mostly clear blue sky and pleasantly warm. It was about 1.30 – 1.45pm and I had just put some food in the oven to cook for my lunch, I then made myself a cup of coffee and rolled a cigarette and went outside to sit on the patio in the back garden. I had been out there maybe 10 or 15 minutes when I noticed a small spherical object zooming across the horizon in the distance. It was quite low down and was heading straight across the sky just above the horizon of the hillside facing me in the distance from my garden. The sphere was pure white in colour and was moving briskly. When it got about ¾ of the way across the horizon it suddenly dipped down behind the hill and I could see that it seemed to stretch out into a strange blurred elongated shape as it did so. I’ve never seen anything like it. I stared across at the horizon looking directly at where this ball had gone, and seconds later I saw a huge craft, like an air-ship or something, rise up slowly from behind the horizon in front of me. I was absolutely astonished. It’s very hard to describe this thing because it totally baffled my senses, and confused my brain that was struggling to make sense of what I was seeing. It was enormous, pure white in colour, the bottom half shaped similar to a child’s spinning-top, the top half looked almost like a cross between a parachute and a big top marquee. Sounds weird, I know, but I am struggling even now to adequately describe this thing. I could see there were several rows of windows on it. I didn’t hear any sound but it was over in the distance, maybe 3 or 4 or 5 miles away from where I was. It rose up into the air, not very high, but slowly and gracefully. It slowly turned around in the air and went back down again behind the hillside and was obscured from my view. Apart from its totally weird appearance, the main thing was its size. This thing was massive. It must have been at least ¼ mile wide. There is no way I can conceive of how such a huge craft could have come out of the sphere, which was much smaller. It would be like comparing a child’s spinning-top to a marble. It was way bigger than any jet plane or helicopter. I couldn’t believe what I had just seen and I continued to stare at that exact spot on the horizon where it had appeared and gone back down, I even climbed up on to the edge of our raised flower-beds, wooden structures only about 3ft tall, in the hope of trying to get a better view. I stared and didn’t even want to blink in case I missed something. But nothing else appeared. It didn’t rise back up again, and nothing more was seen of it (the strange gigantic air-ship) or the small sphere I had first seen. I went back indoors, checked on my food in the oven, made another coffee, rolled another fag and came back outside. I sat there in my garden chair feeling quite perplexed, trying to make sense of what I had just seen. Then, about another 10 minutes later, I saw a cylinder-shaped object, like a cylinder laid on it’s side long-ways, again pure white in colour, sailing through the air coming right above the rooftops in front of me and directly over my house! It was very low in the air, only about 100ft high. I’d say it was perhaps about 8ft to 10ft in length, maybe 2 to 3ft in diameter. It had closed ends, i.e. it was not a hollow tube but a cylinder. There were no markings on it and no visible means of propulsion; no wings, no propellers, no antennae. It made no sound. It seemed to be travelling under some sort of control or power, in a straight line, doing maybe 10 to 20 miles per hour. It was not wavering or wobbling about like a balloon or a kite. It went straight over the roof top of my house, and I ran to the front of the house hoping to get another look but it had vanished, must have gone right over the trees and apartments opposite and kept on going. By now I was losing it. What the hell had I just seen? First the sphere that changed into a massive air-ship, then a flying cylinder. The first of those things were a few miles off in the distance, the latter was immediately above me. The only thing they had in common was the pure white colour of all three things, and the close proximity of time in which I saw them. This incident baffled me more than the flying saucer I had seen in 2011. It disturbed me, because it was so downright weird, strange, and completely inexplicable. It still plays on my mind to this day. I wondered if there was some explanation, if there had been some kind of event taking place, an air show, a balloon race, anything that might explain it, my mind was desperately trying to make some sense of all this. I looked on the internet and found nothing. I emailed Leeds/Bradford Airport to ask them if they knew anything about it or if there had been any type of event taking place that might explain it. I got no reply. There was nothing in the local press afterwards, no reports of anyone seeing anything strange. I hadn’t reported it to the newspaper and it seems that if anyone else did see anything then they hadn’t reported it either. With it being April1st no one would have believed it anyway. I looked on Google maps and tried to pin-point where I saw the sphere and where it might have gone down, where the strange ship might have risen up from. By the looks of it, the sphere was travelling as if it had come from the vicinity of LBA, around the Yeadon/Horsforth area, and where it had gone down (and re-emerged as a giant ship) looked to be an area of open land just behind a military base that is (or at one time was) a barracks for the Territorial Parachute Regiment at Pudsey. I wondered if all of this had been some sort of military test or experiment, perhaps an advanced dirigible, even an exercise in psychological warfare? They could have chosen to do it on April Fools Day to deflect attention as no one believe any reports if it appeared in the press. But why do it on the outskirts of a large heavily populated city and in the airspace of an international airport? If I saw this happen then in a city the size of Bradford it must have potentially been visible to many hundreds of people, yet I heard no more reports, read nothing in the local press or on the internet. I am mystified to this day. Was I seeing something from another Dimension, or somehow having a glimpse of the future? All these things have gone through my mind. But I’m certain I actually saw what I saw. It wasn’t an hallucination. I was wide awake, feeling happy, relaxed, enjoying a quite sunny Sunday, not thinking about UFOs or anything else in particular. It’s something I will never forget ‘til my dying day.
Thank you, trev, for that detailed description of what sounds like a profound and unforgettable experience. Twice! It certainly is mystifying and awe-inspiring as well. Seems like you have already considered whether it could have been some kind of terrestrial phenomenon, hoax, or even a hallucination. Whatever it was it was obviously subjectively very real. The fact that no one else saw this strange and very impressive sounding phenomenon is odd though, given the populated area you describe. But just because no one else took the time to report it does not necessarily mean no one else saw it. One of the questions I have about these sightings has to do with the nature of the physical structure of these things and with their behavior, which always sounds more organic and not entirely mechanical. It would be interesting to hear from other PT readers with perhaps similar experiences or alternate explanations.
