The Oasis Within
An epic story of wisdom
Posted Dec 07, 2015
What does an epic story set in Egypt in 1934 and 1935 have to do with being fulfilled today? Actually, quite a lot, if you read Tom Morris's new book The Oasis Within.
I've been a fan of Morris's work for years, and was excited when I found out that he was coming out with a series of novels, starting with The Oasis Within, described as follows on the companion website:
"What wisdom can equip us best for the journey of life? A young boy and his uncle are traveling across the desert in Egypt in 1934, on their way to Cairo. During a rest at a beautiful oasis, the older man decides to begin preparing his nephew for the future. So, as the days pass, they talk about such things as inner peace, the challenge of change, the dynamic nature of balance, how things can help or harm us, the true power of the mind, the hidden structures of our world, the importance of wisdom, the elements of human nature, the necessity of love, the requirements of success, and the world’s strangest gift of all - uncertainty. The boy keeps a diary. And what he learns on this adventure may be as life changing for readers as it is for him."
I just finished the book, and by the end I couldn't wait for the next one in the series to come out.
What makes this book special?
First, it contains deep but accessible truths that can be applied to life. This isn't esoteric "wisdom", but rather practical wisdom that can be used in our daily lives, as told by an uncle to his nephew. Here are a few examples:
- We can't control the day, but only what we make of the day.
- The worst times in our lives can make possible the best times.
- The purpose of wisdom is to be lived in the world.
- Consider the possibility that uncertainty is a gift.
- Most people don't know what they truly need because they don't know who they really are.
- The oasis within is a place of strength and positive possibility.
This book contains much wisdom for the modern world. And the story of how it came to be is worth reading, too.
Second, the story is fascinating, entertaining, and draws you into a different world. As Walid and his uncle Ali travel with others across the desert, there are many interesting conversations and some surprising events that set the stage for what I anticipate will be a great series of books that I'll read more than once!
I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the next book in the series this month. Much is yet to be revealed about true wisdom for life, and the story of Ali and Walid...
