It is easy to be negative about the challenges and uncertainties our youth face today in this fast-paced world. The current narratives surrounding young people often highlight issues such as social media dependency, mental health struggles, to demanding and too a perceived lack of resilience. This was true of previous generations, too, especially during the tumultuous sixties, which saw great changes.

It is important not to dwell on the negatives of our youth but to celebrate their accomplishments and acknowledge their compassion and humanity. If we can shift our thinking from criticism to celebration, this will be a catalyst for a more positive and supportive treatment of our youth.

The Power of Optimism

As educators, policymakers, community leaders, and adults interacting with youth, we can create an environment of optimism and celebration about our youth that encourages their growth, creativity, and resilience. Government policymakers should create policies that support youth development, and community leaders can foster inclusive communities where diversity is embraced. For example, government policymakers should see education as an investment in our youth's future and alleviate their education debt to allow them to thrive and grow. Completing your education and paying off your education debt loans rob our youth of the ability to purchase property and move confidently to the next stages of life.

Optimism is so powerful and will spark confidence in our youth and help build their confidence as young individuals. Our youth respond when elder people encourage them in life to achieve their personal and career goals.

Celebrating Accomplishments

Our youth today are achieving remarkable things across various fields, from sports, technology, the environment, social enterprises, and science to the arts and activism. They are starting businesses, developing new technology applications, advocating for social justice, and making advances in many creative industries. Their many accomplishments deserve recognition, not only for what they achieve but also for the inspiration they provide to others.

Take young entrepreneurs, for instance — many are behind some of the most exciting innovations in green tech, finding smart ways to tackle environmental problems. Youth-led groups are also stepping up to confront social injustice, pushing for real change on issues like climate action, gender equality, and human rights.

If we can acknowledge our youth's potential to contribute to society, it encourages them to continue pursuing their many passions and creates an environment where their creativity and innovation are valued, instilling a sense of hope and inspiration in all of us.

Emphasising Humanity and Compassion

Beyond their accomplishments and achievements, we should celebrate young people's humanity and compassion. Our young individuals lead the way with empathy, kindness, and a commitment to making the world a better place for everyone. Also, our youth are very open to volunteering and supporting their local communities and the most vulnerable in society.

Responding positively during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the ability of our youth to adapt and respond compassionately. Many young people were very active in supporting their local communities by organising food drives, creating online support networks, and offering their skills and resources to those in need.

Addressing Criticism with Understanding

Youth facing criticism and scrutiny from older generations in the past regarding their behaviours, values, and aspirations is nothing new. Our youth are facing many unique challenges and opportunities. Rather than highlighting what are perceived as shortcomings, we should seek to understand the current environment in which young people are growing up.

Creating a Supportive Environment

Supporting our youth requires us to nurture their development and encourage their contributions. This needs ongoing investment in education, equal opportunities, inclusive communities, and actively involving young people in decisions shaping their future. Mentorship for our youth can provide encouragement and guidance so they can achieve their full potential.

Key takeaway

Our youth today are addressing the many social and environmental challenges we face today. If we recognise their passion, drive, and commitment to change. Let's mentor the next generation and avoid criticism and instead believe in our youth to create a more positive and compassionate future.
