Nostalgia involves a sentimental and wistful view of the past that affects a person's current functioning and orientation to the future (Juhl & Biskas, 2023). There is a bittersweet nature to a nostalgic episode that tends to heighten positive feelings (Routledge et al., 2013). Connections between early recollections as a projective technique and nostalgia are largely unexplored and present an interesting and important line of inquiry. When giving consideration to a first memory of life, implications for the operation of nostalgia are observable in various ways.
In pursuit of understanding early recollections and nostalgia, Keith, a 39-year-old college professor, disclosed a first memory involving a fond and pleasant experience. Keith related: "I was small, about three or four years old. I remember riding with my mother's father, Pawpaw, in an old grey pickup truck. My grandmother, Mawmaw, was on the other side of me. We lived in a small town. They are talking to each other, sitting and enjoying the ride." In response to a question about additional details in the remembrance, Keith said, "They are smiling, having a good day." Reacting to another question about the most important part of the memory, Keith says, "Me being with my grandparents." His feelings at that point are: "Happy and calm."
When interpreting the meaning of Keith's early recollection, consideration is first given to identifying a possible theme or central idea of the remembrance. Keith has a deep appreciation for loving and caring relationships that provide meaning in life and a sense of well-being. Spending pleasant times in the company of cherished persons engenders emotional connections that are energizing and mood-elevating. There is a continuity in past relationships that fosters a desire to experience calm and pleasant social events as life unfolds in the present.
Relating to personality dimensions based on Keith's early recollection, he has a high degree of activity. Keith finds nurturing and supportive relationships to be enlivening and calming at the same time. Further, warm emotional connections with others engender a sense of fulfillment and meaning. While Keith has a gentle and contemplative way of being, he has a vitality of engagement with a growth-mindset when approaching challenges and opportunities in life.
Keith has an elevated level of social interest or a kinship with other living beings and a sense of belonging in the human community. For Keith, meaningful social interactions foster a continuity between past and current functioning that is enriching. As in his early recollection, nostalgic episodes orient Keith to empathically understand the experiences of others in diverse contexts. At the same time, Keith enjoys a sense of well-being through purposeful bonds with other people in mutual endeavors. This emotional connection also relates to Keith's motivation to contribute to the lives and experiences of persons in his life and in wider domains.
Consistent with the narration of his early recollection, Keith has an optimistic outlook on life. While he contentedly experienced the presence of his grandparents in his remembrance, Keith sadly misses his now deceased and cherished grandfather. Yet, and this has taken time, Keith is able to bring to mind various occasions with Pawpaw that evoke fond and pleasant memories. Broadly speaking, Keith has expectations that events in life will result in positive outcomes. This is especially so when he is able to associate himself with supportive and caring persons in various endeavors. Further, Keith enjoys the calmness that exists within his optimistic orientation that elevates a sense of well-being.
As another personality dimension, self-efficacy involves a belief in one's capacity to overcome challenges and hardships in life. Although his early recollection does not entail adverse circumstances, Keith's self-efficacy is high in terms of psychological functioning. In the context of positive and sustaining relationships, Keith feels capable of working through difficulties and obstacles. Additionally, a sense of meaning is derived from his emotional connections with loved ones, which provides a foundation to endure through difficult times that may initially seem daunting or overwhelming.
Conscientiousness involves being reliable and following through on commitments and responsibilities. In Keith's early recollection, there is a tone of gentle humor and comfort that is consistent with social norms and harmonious interpersonal relationships. In the presence of his grandparents, Keith enjoys listening to them and appreciates the pleasant activity. This interaction suggests an intent to act in responsible ways in order to enhance the well-being and enjoyment of others in social contexts.
Relating to perceptual modalities, Keith's auditory sense is prominent and distinct in his early recollection as he makes reference to his grandparents' talking with each other. In his life, Keith finds that auditory experiences, such as quiet conversations and listening to pleasant-sounding music, are mood-elevating. Relating to color, Keith observes the grey color of the truck in his first memory. On an everyday basis, various hues are emotionally enriching in such instances as seeing colors in built locales or in nature. The object of the old truck in Keith's early recollection is also distinct and evocative in his first memory. Old trucks and other vintage objects are of keen interest in his life. Finally, as in his memory, places are special to Keith in the company of others that elicit a sense of familiarity and comfort.
For Keith, reflecting back on pleasant memories from the past contributes to a sense of calmness and continuity in his existence. As with a number of persons, he experiences a nostalgic episode perhaps a few times a week. Research on the relationship between early recollections and nostalgia is only in its initial stage of inquiry. A particular area that deserves further exploration is how unpleasant first memories relate to nostalgia. Early recollections involve events from the past that are compelling. Like nostalgic experiences, their influence affects a person's psychological functioning in the present and in the future.
